'Well,' cried Legolas as he ran up, 'I have not brought the Sun. She is walking in the blue fields of the South, and a little wreath of snow on this Redhorn hillock troubles her not at all. But I have brought back a gleam of good hope for those who are doomed to go on feet. There is the greatest wind-drift of all just beyond the turn, and there our Strong Men were almost buried. They despaired, until I returned and told them that the drift was little wider than a wall. And on the other side the snow suddenly grows less, while further down it is no more than a white coverlet to cool a hobbit's toes.'

a lot of little shittery to unpack here but the thing that sends me the most is the capital S Strong Men

I've reached the Helm's Deep chapter :>>

'Where is Gimli?'

'I do not know,' said Aragorn. 'I last saw him fighting on the ground behind the wall, but the enemy swept us apart.'

'Alas! That is evil news,' said Legolas.

'He is stout and strong,' said Aragorn. 'Let us hope that he will escape back to the caves. There he would be safe for a while. Safer than we. Such a refuge would be to the liking of a dwarf.'

'That must be my hope,' said Legolas. 'But I wish that he had come this way. I desired to tell Master Gimli that my tale is now thirty-nine.'

---

'Forty-two, Master Legolas!' he cried. 'Alas! My axe is notched: the forty-second had an iron collar on his neck. How is it with you?'

'You have passed my score by one,' answered Legolas. 'But I do not grudge you the game, so glad am I to see you on your legs!'

'There lies the fastness of Southern Mirkwood,' said Haldir. 'It is clad in a forest of dark fir, where the trees strive one against another and their branches rot and wither. In the midst upon a stony height stands Dol Guldur, where long the hidden Enemy had his dwelling.

:( i didn’t realize that like—Legolas can see his home from Lothlorien. He can see the difference he can see the shadow over his forest from the golden light of this one

β€œLegolas Greenleaf long under tree // In joy thou hast lived. Beware of the Sea! // If thou hearest the cry of the gull on the shore, // Thy heart shall then rest in the forest no more.”

I will dissect this entry of the newsletter line by line later, but I just wanted to say, the sheer longing and awe in Gimli’s voice when he sees the mountains of his ancestors pierce my heart.

And Legolas remarking that the stones themselves miss the Elves that lived here.

Ouch.

I firmly believe that when Legolas goes to Erebor he only has 1 joke and everyone hates it. Like someone will be like “wow ur so tall” and he’ll be like “I’m short for an elf” and then laugh at his own joke but everyone just stares at him.

Gimli laughs though
