Gimli's words to Elrond, "Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens", are justly famous - but I have only just noticed that at the end of FotR, when Frodo has walked off to choose between going to Minas Tirith or directly to Mordor and the Fellowship are all talking about which road they will take, Legolas directly echoes him.

Gimli: ... I would choose Minas Tirith. But if [Frodo] does not, then I follow him.

Legolas: And I too follow him. It would be faithless now to say farewell.

HUH.

just sitting here thinking abt that bit in two towers where gimli speaks at great length of the beauty of dwarven caves and how mich he wishes legolas could see them and it's the longest he speaks in the whole book and at the end legolas goes gimli! you have moved me, and insists that if they make it out of this adventure alive theyll spend some time traveling together, just the two of them, and he'd take gimli to the forests and then they'd go see the caves of helms deep together and share in their wonder. homie is it gay to tenderly plan a honeymoon together
