Dwarf doors are invisible when closed. Their own masters cannot find them, if their secrets are forgotten.

Anonymous asked,

With respect to the Caradhras sass, one of my favorite things from HoME is that in an early draft Gandalf's "I can't make fire without fuel" response is not "if Elves could fly you could fetch the sun" but "well I could set you on fire"

tolkien-feels answered,

Hold up, let me get the quote because it’s marvelous

‘It is a pity,’ said Legolas, 'that Gandalf cannot go before us with a bright flame, and melt us a path.’

'It is a pity that Elves cannot fly over mountains, and fetch the Sun to save them,’ answered Gandalf. 'Even I need something to work on. I cannot burn snow. But I could turn Legolas into a flaming torch, if that will serve: he would burn bright while he lasted.’

'Spare me!’ cried Legolas. 'I fear that a dragon is concealed in the shape of our wizard. Yet a tame dragon would be more useful at this hour.’

'It will be a wild dragon, if you say any more,’ said Gandalf.

I love that as savage as canon Gandalf is, he’s still a redacted version. Christopher Tolkien did us all a service by unleashing the full force of Gandalf’s sass.

the ring goes south

Many that live deserve death. Some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgment. Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum has some part to play yet, for good or ill before this is over. The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many.
