genuinely can't believe that lestat experienced his first shred of actual and intense happiness with nicki first in auvergne and then in paris, laughing and drinking and believing whole-heartedly that they both had it made (he said his cup was full! HIS CUP!!! WAS FULL!!!). only it turns out nicki was miserable this whole time and in truth resented lestat for his relentless optimism, for his determination to forge ahead when nicki wanted nothing more than for both of them to die in each other's arms in the nearest gutter. lestat experienced his height of happiness with nicki and within a few hectic months it all nosedived into the bleakest, most harrowing denouement ever. he left nicki behind and they sent him a letter saying hey nicki died for good and also he was corporally punished and completely anguished before he did. if only you'd said something sooner because we could have fedexed you his severed hands

is it any wonder lestat was having his happily-ever-after dance with louis in the final book of the series and staring off into the distance going but why couldn't nicki be happy. IS IT ANY WONDER

Thinking about how easily Vegas opens up at the slightest hint of kindness. Like Pete tells him once that he isn't a failure and shouldn't have to compete against Kinn, and Vegas goes full malewife mode. How starved was Vegas for affection that he falls in love with the first man to tell him he deserves better than chasing the approval of an abusive father? That he shouldn't hurt himself? That he's worth loving and choosing as he is?

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone write about the Flight of the Noldor with the honestly reasonable argument, “Why don’t we all wait until Finwë returns from Mandos and see what he has to say?” and I can only assume it’s because we all intuitively agree that Fëanor does not for a second think his father is going to return, ever. Parents don’t return from Mandos, especially when their death is your fault; that’s just another pretty lie the Valar tell to make you stop weeping and shouting.
