I don’t know if this is supported or disproved by canon but I just believe in my heart that jiang cheng is a complete square about safety. doesn’t start the engine til jin ling has his seatbelt in etc. every home DIY project he does is completely compliant with OH&S standards for no reason. he reads that twitter thread about gas ranges contributing to asthma risk in children and IMMEDIATELY renovates to put in an electric stove top. every citizen in yunmeng jiang had FUCKING BETTER get their flu shots every year on the dot.

jin ling is NOT allowed to go on a trampoline!!

I was commenting to ceru the other day that in post-timeskip CQL, Jiang Cheng seems to be very cautious when it comes to putting Jiang disciples in danger. Like, other sects routinely send their disciples into danger but with the Jiang, if a situation is dangerous, either Jiang Cheng leads the way or Jiang Cheng goes alone. And some of this may be protagonist camera – if Jiang disciples went off on their own without a protagonist along, would we even know? – but while we see Nie and Jin and to a lesser extent Lan disciple-parties going off and getting into trouble, Jiang does not.

My theory was that Jiang Cheng is intensely protective of the new Jiang and guards them jealously. He will not spend his disciples; if there’s something dangerous he can’t do by himself, then he certainly won’t waste men on it.

(And this approach comes with its down sides – like, say, the lady in the novel who complains that people of Yunmeng don’t get night-hunting help as often as they might like – but I think it’s a pretty natural outgrowth of Jiang Cheng’s formative traumas.)
