I think living with two blind people (as far as he knew) for three years was a factor in how comfortable Xue Yang got in Yi City. I think not feeling observed or judged on his appearance for once in his life allowed him the freedom to express fragility and sincerity without fear of being punished for it. By the time the confrontation happens, he's unbelievably visually expressive with his emotions, in a way that is raw and vulnerable and utterly lost on a blind Xiao Xingchen. And he knows it's lost on Xiao Xingchen-- that's why he's comfortable doing it! It kills me that seeing his vulnerability might have actually helped diffuse the situation, but of course, if he could see they never would have gotten there to begin with. None of the bad would have happened if he could see, but I suspect none of the good would have either. Pain.
