idk how familiar Tolkien was with Japanese mythology, but there’s this one myth that’s so similar to the story of Míriel and Fëanor that I don’t think it’s a coincidence

so there was this goddess named Izanami, and she bore a son named Kagu-tsuchi. he was a fire god, and his spirit was so hot that he burned his mother to death. his birth marks the beginning of death in Japanese mythology. Izanami’s husband, Izanagi, sought to bring her back from the underworld, but she refused to leave and they kind of had the world’s first divorce

also Kagu-tsuchi’s body was broken into eight pieces that formed eight volcanoes. eight pointed star, anyone?
