personally i would prefer it if they were to do devil's minion right now (daniel accidentally homewrecking louis and armand would be comedy, need them to fall reluctantly in love after this fraught introduction, want to see eric bogosian do some insane shit) but if they were to place it in the past and do some memory manipulation stuff, i know how i'd do it:

not long after that first interview, louis and armand fall out, and louis goes off on his own. armand grows antsy, gets bored, ends up going after daniel out of curiosity. the most insane romance in the history of fiction ensues. eventually daniel walks out for good, gets sober, gets his life together, gets married, has a kid. relapses. finds himself back with armand. gets sober. goes back to his wife. relapses. this cycle repeats itself a couple times. marriage implodes for good.

around the same time daniel gets divorced, louis and armand are sort of getting back together, and this time, armand does acquiesce to a request daniel has probably been making for a decade: he ends their relationship for good in the only way he knows will work, by making daniel forget about it. a good part of his first divorce, a lot of his memories with his first daughter, most of the eighties, that interview, all gone, but daniel finally gets to have a life.

i don't know that he would necessarily tell louis about daniel —right now my take is that he would argue to himself that this would upset louis because of the attack, so he doesn't mention it— but maybe he does tell him about how he had to wipe a mortal's memory to end their relationship. and that is what prompts louis to ask him to edit out the worst of his memories, to help him build a version of his story that he can live with.

okay so CONSIDER. bc in the devil's minion chapter, daniel goes looking for lestat. this is how armand finds him. i'm really obsessed with this idea that daniel went looking for an entirely different vampire and basically trips and falls into a basement that armand locks him in for three days and it goes the general way it does in the book with armand saying this:

he's intrigued, which is why he follows him in the first place, but then armand trips and falls and falls in love
