something about how mulder and scully fell in love so quickly, so early that it was too early to admit how deeply entwined in each other they were, how deep the love they felt was that the short amount of time they knew each other couldn't justify something of that depth, but then enough time does pass, enough so that it'd make sense to fall in love that deeply when the length of the time spent together does justify it. but they'd fallen into a pattern of comfort so early on that when that amount of time had passed they didn't even know how else to be anymore, what would a delayed admission of love mean when they'd given themselves to each other on their first case together? something being admitted or vocalized wouldn't change anything because they'd built something together that never required a word ever being uttered. so when sufficient time passes that it'd be "normal" to feel so strongly about the other, an admittance is rendered useless because they'd already proven themselves to the other in a way that traditionally a confession of love would catalyse.
